Devoted to Evangelism? Should you be?

Thoughts by J.I. Packer –

Just how much should the “average” Christian be involved in evangelism?  Sure, everyone should be “open” for the Lord to use, right?  I mean, God just might open some doors this year.  But, the bulk of evangelism should be by the pastor or the evangelist, right?  Wow!  I encounter these kinds of views all the time by fellow Christians.

I came across this thought by J.I. Packer, which is very instructive.  Addressing the parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14-30, he says the following: “For what Christ has given us to use must be put to use; it is not enough simply to hide it away.  We may apply this to our stewardship of the gospel.  The truth about salvation has been made known to us, not for us simply to preserve (though we must certainly do that), but also, and primarily, for us to spread.  The light is not meant to be hiddden under the bushel.  It is meant to shine; and it is our business to see that it shines.  . He who does not devote himself to evangelism in every way that he can is not, therefore, playing the part of a good and faithful servant of Jesus Christ.”

How does this resonate with you?  As I have the privilege of interacting with more and more unbelievers, I know one thing for certain.  They are not running to us to get the truth!  And many, many have no clue about what it is to be saved.  Could it be that’s why Jesus told us to go to them?  May I plead with you to offer yourself as part of the answer to the prayer our Savior told His servants to pray–THE HARVEST IS PLENTIFUL, BUT THE LABORERS ARE FEW; PRAY THEREFORE THAT THE LORD OF THE HARVEST WOULD THRUST OUT LABORERS INTO THE HARVEST.
